School Council
By law each school must have a school council. The school council is an important means of providing the children with a voice so that they become more active and responsible participants in school life and so more involved in their learning.
At Shaw Cross School we elect children from Year 1 and Year 2. The children apply to be councillors and are then voted for by their peers following a democratic process. The teachers are always very encouraged by the high number of children who consider them confident enough to stand for election and how seriously those elected take their role.
We stress that school councillor's must be committed as often meetings take place at play times and must be good role models to other children in such a position of responsibility.
Over the years the School Council have :
- been involved in Headteacher interviews
- put forward ideas of how to encourage parents to park safely
- been involved in design of school building improvements
- put forward ideas of how to make playtimes more fun and safer
- acted as "Buddies" to new children
- put forward ideas of how to improve personal hygiene (handwashing etc)
- chosen learning resources on behalf of the other children
- voiced concerns and ideas of their classmates
